A master of illusion: stones and solid metal plates float as if held by magic amidst glass constructs, wires and the edges of broken and melted transparent panes form poetic depths in the wooden frames. In his sculptures and material pictures, the Catalan artist Jordi Alcaraz (*1963 in Calella/Barcelona) uses free, randomly created and yet carefully placed forms to create an impression of multi-layered reality. He plays with seemingly irreconcilable opposites, proving them wrong without revealing how, through his choice of materials and their treatment. His works are the result of a process whose course remains hidden from the viewer.
As a young artist, Alcaraz spent a lot of time in Barcelona’s museums and studied Romanesque paintings, sculptures by Catalan artists and the works of his predecessors: Joan Miró, Salvador Dalí, Antoni Tàpies and Eduardo Chillida. At the Musée de l’Homme in Paris, he studied tribal art in depth. In his early works, he focused on figurative sculptures and graphic editions; it was only later, in the 1990s, that he discovered his unique style. He repeatedly uses mirrors and books to provoke confrontational views and engage his audience. By embedding his works in wooden frames and pictorial formats, he succeeds in reinterpreting classical painting.
Since the mid-1980s, Jordi Alcaraz has participated in numerous solo and group exhibitions in Europe, particularly in Spain. He has also published several limited edition art publications.
In our winter exhibition we are showing works by Jordi Alcaraz from the last two decades. Another part of the exhibition will be shown at Kunst Lager Haas, which can be visited by prior arrangement. Galerie Haas is also participating in the Charlottenwalk this autumn; we will be open on Saturday, 30 November 2024, from 12 to 6 pm.
