Until around 1930, André Derain, one of the of the main representatives of Fauvism, was one of the superstars of the French art scene. Colleagues like Picasso and Brâncuși regarded him as an important influence. He was modern and open to new and different things.

It is due to the personal trauma of the First World War that Derain and his art changed. As a result of a lack of understanding for this development, little attention was paid to his work for many years. It was not until 1990 that the artist’s slow rediscovery began, which continues to this day.

He was very close to great artists of his time such as Matisse and Picasso. His work can be found in, amongst others, the Museum of Modern Art in New York, and the Tate Gallery in London.
