Otto Mueller

* 16TH OCTOBER 1874 IN LIEBAU, SCHLESIEN (GER)
† 24TH SEPTEMBER 1930 IN OBERNIGK CLOSE TO BRESLAU (POL)

The German painter and lithographer Otto Mueller is regarded as one of the most important German Expressionists. Between 1894 and 1896 he completed his studies at the art academy in Dresden, which he continued at the art academy in Munich. After marrying Maschka Meyerhofer in 1905 he moved to Berlin in 1908 where he founded the ‘Neue Secession’ and came into contact with the ‘die Brücke’ artists whom he joined in 1910. He also exhibited with the Blue Rider artists. After the war he taught at the Staatlichen Akademie für Kunst und Gewerbe in Breslau until his death in 1930. The central theme of his work was the unity between man and nature which he expressed through numerous his works showing nudes and landscapes.
