Close is one of the most well known Photo-Realists in the USA. In 1972 he took part in documenta V and as early as 1973 he received a solo exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. His work is represented in numerous international museums such as the Salomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York or the Tate Gallery in London.
